Massage and Chiropractic work great together, but which one first?

Muscle tension and joint dysfunction are very common problems that many people face on a daily basis. Every muscle is attached to bones, and when our muscles have either too much, or not enough tension, there is the possibility for bones and joints to be pulled out of alignment. It is no coincidence that most people faced with joint dysfunction are also faced with muscular tension or weakness.

Sedentary lifestyles and desk work can lead to many postural abnormalities, as well as tight, achy muscles, or even painful spasms. On the other hand, labour work or physical exercise can be strenuous on the body and often lead to repetitive stress injuries. Is there one “fix-all” remedy for these issues? The short answer is “No”. However it has been proven that complementing massage therapy with chiropractic care has shown to help achieve a more rapid recovery and full recovery.

You might be wondering “Should I get massage therapy before or after my chiropractic adjustments?” It seems like there is no best fit for everyone. If a person is suffering from joint dysfunction and receiving frequent chiropractic adjustments, the last thing anyone wants is to have tight muscles pulling them back into poor alignment. Massage therapy performed after chiropractic adjustments can help your muscles remain balanced, helping to maintain proper spinal joint alignment. Nothing is better than coming in with painful joints and muscles and leaving with a body that is relaxed and well adjusted.

On the other hand if a person is suffering from a very tight muscle or group of muscles, such as a spasm, it is shown to be beneficial to relive that tension prior to the chiropractic adjustment, eliminating the risk of dysfunctional muscles interfering with the chiropractic work. Chiropractic adjustments are very rarely painful but if one of these tight muscles go into a spasm during an adjustment it can cause pain during the procedure.

Which ever method you choose, the combination of the two treatments are most beneficial for pain management, proper alignment, restoring mobility, improving athletic performance, work hardiness and improving quality of life.
